Ariane, in the stories, was always forced to wear muted colors so that she wouldn’t attract too much attention to herself. I think it’s part of the overall theme of Ariane no longer hiding (from herself or others.) –This is the first one cover where her hair is down. She’s lost so much at the start of this book, and she’s just had ENOUGH. Ariane is knocking things down and taking back control from those who seek to control her. I love the discord in the image, the destruction of the previously well-ordered line (aka a giant metaphor for Project Paper Doll). Tracey and I talked about the falling mannequin idea over a year ago, and they made it happen! (I believe the photographer is Michael Frost.) I love so many things about this cover, I’m not sure where to start! Huge thanks to Tracey Keevan, my editor, and Tyler Nevins, the designer.
